Sensors have quietly become one of the defining technologies of the twenty-first century. They are embedded in the phones we carry, the vehicles we drive, the factories that manufacture our goods, the hospitals that monitor our health, and the environmental networks that track the changing planet. Yet the sensors of today are only a waypoint. A new generation of sensing devices — built from atomically thin two-dimensional materials, flexible and stretchable polymers, engineered nanostructures, and self-powered architectures, and made intelligent through embedded machine learning — is rapidly emerging from research laboratories into real products. This book is an attempt to bring that transition into a single, structured, and pedagogically organized volume.
Next-Generation Sensor Technologies: Fabrication, Characterization, and Real-World Applications was written to serve as a comprehensive, graduate-level and advanced-undergraduate textbook that connects three threads that are too often taught separately: (1) the materials science and cleanroom fabrication techniques used to build modern sensors, (2) the analytical and characterization methods used to verify and quantify their performance, and (3) the systems-level engineering — signal conditioning, connectivity, machine learning, and packaging — required to deploy them in real environments. Each chapter combines fundamental principles with device case studies, comparative tables, and original schematic illustrations designed to build physical intuition.
The book is organized into eighteen chapters, moving from foundational sensor theory (Chapters 1–2), through advanced materials and fabrication (Chapters 3–4), major device families — MEMS/NEMS, flexible/wearable, optical, chemical, biosensors, piezoelectric/triboelectric, and magnetic sensors (Chapters 5–11) — into characterization methodology (Chapters 12–13), electronics and intelligent systems integration (Chapters 14–16), and finally applications, reliability, and future outlook (Chapters 17–18). Readers may proceed sequentially for a full course, or use individual chapters as stand-alone references.
This text assumes a working knowledge of undergraduate physics, chemistry, and circuit theory. It is intended for graduate students and advanced undergraduates in electrical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, applied physics, and biomedical engineering, as well as practicing engineers and researchers who need a structured reference on the current state of sensor technology. A note on scope and currency: sensor technology is one of the fastest-moving fields in applied science, with thousands of peer-reviewed papers published every year. This book reflects the state of the field as understood through late 2025 and 2026, drawing on major review articles and standard references. Readers undertaking research or product design should treat the quantitative figures presented here as representative and pedagogically illustrative, and should always consult the current primary literature, datasheets, and standards documents for design-critical values.
It is my hope that this book gives readers both the conceptual foundation and the practical vocabulary needed to read the current literature critically, to design and characterize their own sensor devices, and to appreciate how a piece of two-dimensional material or a micromachined membrane can be engineered into a device that senses the world.
