Analog electronics forms the physical bedrock on which the entire edifice of modern electronic technology rests. Even in an age dominated by digital processors, software-defined systems, and machine learning accelerators, every one of those digital signals must, at some point, be generated, amplified, filtered, converted, or interfaced through analog circuitry. A microphone’s whisper-level signal must be amplified before it reaches an analog-to-digital converter; a switching regulator must convert one voltage rail into another with millivolt precision; a radio-frequency front end must select one signal from among a spectrum crowded with interference — all of these are, at their heart, analog electronics problems.
This book, Analog Electronics: Principles, Design, and Applications, was written to give students, self-learners, and practising engineers a single, coherent, and rigorous treatment of the subject — from the physics of the semiconductor junction to the design of complete feedback amplifiers, oscillators, and regulated power supplies. The guiding philosophy throughout has been to connect physical intuition with quantitative design procedure. Each device is first explained in terms of the underlying physics, then characterized mathematically, and finally applied in practical circuits that a student could reasonably breadboard and test.
Organization of the Book. The text is divided into six parts. Part I builds the semiconductor foundation, covering the physics of doped silicon, the PN junction, and diode circuits including rectifiers, clippers, clampers, and voltage-regulating diodes. Part II develops the bipolar junction transistor in detail — its physical operation, biasing techniques, small-signal modelling, and frequency response. Part III performs the same treatment for field-effect devices, covering both JFETs and the MOSFETs that dominate modern integrated circuits. Part IV extends single-stage analysis to multistage, differential, and power amplifiers, including the thermal and efficiency considerations that govern real power-electronic design. Part V is devoted to feedback theory, sinusoidal oscillators, and the wave-shaping multivibrator circuits (including the ubiquitous 555 timer) that generate the clocks and timing signals used throughout electronics. Part VI treats the operational amplifier as the workhorse building block of modern analog design, covering linear applications, active filters, comparators, voltage regulators, and the noise and distortion considerations that separate a working circuit from a well-engineered one.
Pedagogical Features. Every chapter opens with a concise set of learning objectives and closes with a chapter summary, a set of conceptual review questions, and numerical design problems. Worked examples are interleaved throughout the body of each chapter so that the reader sees the analytical technique applied immediately after it is introduced, rather than isolated in a separate section. Over eighty original diagrams — circuit schematics, device cross-sections, characteristic curves, and frequency-response plots — have been hand-prepared for this edition to make the visual and mathematical treatments reinforce one another. Data and design tables are provided wherever standard values, comparative parameters, or design formulas benefit from tabular presentation.
Intended Audience. The book is intended primarily for undergraduate students of electrical and electronics engineering taking a first or second course in analog electronics, and it assumes a working knowledge of basic circuit theory (Ohm’s law, Kirchhoff’s laws,
