Four strings, and one habit instead of fourteen. On a guitar there are places where every chord of a key falls under one hand. On a four-string bass there are none — not in any of these fourteen keys. What there is instead is an answer that does not change: every key in this book is covered by exactly three hand positions, and in twelve of the fourteen those three sit inside three frets of one another. Five in the other two. So it is one habit rather than fourteen. Take the three positions the key names, and the whole of it is under your hands without leaving that stretch of the neck. How it works Every key gets a spread. On the left, the grid: every chord of the key, drawn once at the fret it starts on, as a shape you can actually play. Read down a column and you have one chord all over the neck. On the right, the scale on the neck — and the three positions that cover the key, with all seven chords drawn across them. Each spread names its own three, taken from the grid rather than chosen, so the book cannot promise a position it does not draw. Not guitar shapes with two strings removed Four strings tuned in fourths put the chord tones in a different order, so these are genuinely different grips — and a bass hand covers the same four frets across a wider pitch range, so what one position reaches is different too. Nothing in this book appears in the guitar volumes. Also inside Six progressions worked through all fourteen keys — the three-chord, the axis, the doo-wop, ii–V–I, rhythm changes and the twelve-bar.
