Dorian and natural minor are one note apart. As triads that note changes three of the seven chords; add the fourth note and it changes four. The signature is the fourth degree: A dorian gives you D7 where A natural minor gives you Dm7, and that single chord is most of what dorian sounds like.

Across the six modes in this book, 26 of the 42 chords are ones the parallel major or minor never hands you. As triads, only 20 are. So this is not the triad book with a note added. It is the book where the modes stop being scales and start being chords you can name.

• Phrygian — Am7, B♭maj7, C7, Dm7, Em7♭5, Fmaj7, Gm7
• Locrian — Am7♭5, B♭maj7, Cm7, Dm7, E♭maj7, F7, Gm7
• Harmonic minor — AmMaj7, Bm7♭5, C+maj7, Dm7, E7, Fmaj7, G♯°7

That last row is worth the book on its own: a minor-major seventh, an augmented major seventh and a diminished seventh, all belonging to one key, and almost nowhere else a guitarist will meet them.

How it works

Every key gets a spread. On the left, the grid — every seventh chord of the mode, drawn once at the fret it starts on, as a shape you can play. Read down a column for one chord all over the neck; a rule in the margin marks the frets one hand covers from a place where the whole mode is within reach. On the right, the mode on the neck, and every chord drawn out at those positions.

Four-note voicings sit inside a four-fret span more ways than three-note ones, so this book is denser than the triad one: 63% of every grid is a shape rather than a gap, and there are 111 hand positions where every chord of the mode is playable without moving at all.

Every shape is real

Each one was found by a search that checks it against a real hand — four frets, no finger asked to be in two places. Nothing in this book works only on paper.
