Illinois’ Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program is credited as one of the best in the nation by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The CDL program, including Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLPs), has been revamped to ensure that truck drivers licensed in Illinois meet the highest possible standards.

Federal law requires anyone who applies for a CLP/CDL or currently holds a CDL to certify their commercial driving medical status. All CLP/CDL holders who operate in non-excepted interstate commerce must keep a current DOT medical certificate on file with the Secretary of State’s office. This law strengthens the CDL program by ensuring that truckers meet minimum health and safety standards before getting behind the wheel. For details on CDL/CLP medical certification, see Section 15.

The Secretary of State’s office has initiated a law that exempts qualified, current, or former military personnel who participated in military heavy-vehicle programs from taking the CDL written knowledge test.
