Descrição do livro

A welded joint is the only part of a steel structure that is manufactured on site, by hand, in a few minutes, and then asked to carry load for fifty years. The material is created at the same moment as the joint, by the person making it, under conditions no drawing fully controls.

The knowledge needed to handle that is scattered across specialist volumes that do not speak to one another. Metallurgy sits in one book, joint strength in another, fatigue in a third, flaw acceptance in a fourth, and qualification in a code. None of them traces how a choice made at the arc becomes a crack found in service. Engineers assemble the picture from fragments, and the joins between the fragments are where welded joints fail.

This handbook follows one joint the whole way, in sixteen chapters and four parts: from the physics of the heat source, through the microstructure the thermal cycle leaves behind, to the stress the finished joint carries, the flaw that may be in it, and the record that proves it was made as specified. Every stage is worked through with numbers. Sixty-four worked examples carry their results forward, so a cooling time computed in one chapter becomes a hardness in the next and a preheat requirement after that.

What this handbook will help you do:

— Trace a weld from arc energy to cooling rate to microstructure, and see why one procedure behaves differently on a thicker section.
— Determine when preheat is required and why, and what a carbon equivalent figure does and does not tell you.
— Recognise each cracking mechanism from where and when it appears, and know which of its conditions can actually be removed.
— Size fillet and groove welds, check the base metal as well as the weld, and analyse weld groups under eccentric load.
— Classify a fatigue detail, apply cumulative damage to a real spectrum, and assess a flaw that has already been found.
— Select an examination method knowing what it cannot see, and why flaw orientation decides whether it is detected.
— Build a qualification programme and an inspection plan that demonstrate the work was done as specified.

Topics covered: Arc physics and energy transfer; flux-shielded and gas-shielded arc processes; resistance, solid-state and high-energy-density joining; filler metals, fluxes and shielding gases; thermal cycles, heat input and cooling time; fusion zone solidification; the heat-affected zone, hardness and preheat; hydrogen and the cracking mechanisms; stainless steels, nickel alloys and aluminium; residual stress, distortion and postweld heat treatment; joint geometry and weld symbols; static strength of welded joints; fatigue and fracture assessment; discontinuities and nondestructive examination; procedure and welder qualification.

Who it is for: Written for practising welding, mechanical, structural and materials engineers responsible for welded fabrication; for fabrication and quality engineers who write or review procedures; for design engineers who specify welds without a metallurgical background; for senior undergraduate and graduate students; and for experienced inspectors moving into engineering work. It assumes engineering fundamentals and no prior welding knowledge. Seventy-five original figures, a hundred numbered equations, and a hundred and twenty-nine practice problems with complete solutions.

Open it at the joint in front of you and work forward from the arc, or backward from the failure.
