Leonardo believed that painting was the supreme goal of knowledge: it encompassed philosophy, which was its foundation, and embraced both science and art. Barely a third of what he wrote has survived, and for one reason or another, some of his paintings were lost. What remains is sufficient to affirm that Leonardo marks a milestone in history. Transcending his era, his thinking remains valid and significant even in our own time. He was so far ahead of his time that he seems to have foreseen the needs of twenty-first-century humanity. We are still benefiting from his technological concepts, which in his time were incomprehensible inventions or, in any case, impossible to execute. As Sigmund Freud wrote, Leonardo da Vinci was a man who awoke in the darkness of morning, while others still slept.
