Descrição do livro

For decades, much of the comparative political economy literature has revolved around the experiences of Europe, North America, and parts of Asia. Concepts such as “liberal market economies” or “coordinated market economies” have shaped debates about institutional complementarity, competitiveness, and development. Yet Africa has often been left on the margins of these discussions, treated either as an exception or as a uniform case of underdevelopment. This book begins from a different premise: that Sub-Saharan Africa is not outside capitalism but deeply embedded in its diverse forms. From South Africa’s racialized capitalism to Nigeria’s petro-capitalism, to Ethiopia’s state-led developmentalism, African countries demonstrate their own varieties of capitalism that are worthy of serious theoretical and empirical attention.

The book connects theory to practice by pairing global debates on capitalism with detailed country case studies from across Sub-Saharan Africa. It examines how different institutional arrangements—whether in labor markets, finance, agriculture, or state–business relations—produce distinctive outcomes in growth, inequality, and social development. Rather than assume a single African model, the book explores variation within the continent, highlighting both convergence (such as through regional integration or global financial flows) and divergence (shaped by history, politics, and resources).

The approach is comparative and interdisciplinary. Political economy provides the foundation, but insights are drawn from sociology, history, and development studies. Each case study situates national policy choices within wider regional and global dynamics, showing how African economies navigate pressures from globalization, external actors, and domestic social demands.

The analysis is anchored in the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) framework, while also critically engaging with its limitations. Traditional VoC categories—liberal vs. coordinated market economies—cannot fully capture the hybrid, fluid, and often informal dynamics of African capitalism. Thus, the book adopts a flexible conceptual toolkit, combining VoC with perspectives on informality, state capitalism, rentier economies, and developmental states.

Methodologically, the book blends comparative case studies with thematic analysis. It draws on secondary literature, policy reports, and available economic data, but also emphasizes the interpretive dimension: understanding how African policymakers, entrepreneurs, and citizens themselves frame and negotiate their economic models. The result is not a prescriptive account of what African economies “should” be, but an exploration of what they are becoming, and what this means for global debates on capitalism.
