This artist's book did not emerge from a desire to document Valparaíso as a tourist inventory or as a collection of sketches made in passing. Instead, it is the result of a search that has accompanied my work for more than three decades: an attempt to translate the world I inhabit through artistic practice, in the hope of coming a little closer to understanding our experience of living within it. For me, observing has never been merely an act of representing reality, but rather a way of understanding it. To observe is a form of knowledge—a way of suspending time and entering into a dialogue with that which, if only for a brief moment, chooses to reveal itself.
Valparaíso occupies a singular place within this ongoing investigation. Not only because of the strength of its geography or the richness of its history, but because it is a city where the passage of time remains visible. Its hills, stairways, façades, and inhabitants preserve the traces of countless lives, making every walk a unique experience. It is precisely this condition that draws me back again and again, wandering without a fixed itinerary, allowing intuition, attention, and chance to guide my encounters with those places where the city seems to speak with greater intensity.
Like the old masters who travelled in order to study a place rather than simply illustrate it, each stay in Valparaíso has been an immersive experience. The sketchbook ceases to be a simple support and becomes a space for reflection, where drawing, painting, and writing offer different ways of approaching the same experience. Each image is the result of time spent, of sustained presence before the world, and of a desire to understand what slowly reveals itself.
This book forms part of a broader investigation that has unfolded over more than thirty years across cities, landscapes, and diverse territories. Although each project possesses its own identity, they all arise from the same conviction: that art remains a way of thinking about and knowing the world. More than portraying Valparaíso, these pages seek to share an experience of attentive observation, where the act of creating becomes a form of presence and an invitation to discover, within what seems ordinary, a broader dimension of our existence.
