But this book also asks the questions the celebration usually skips. Who actually did this - not as gossip, but as arithmetic? Stories of success are assembled backwards, and the assembly has a direction: it credits whatever survived the telling and quietly deletes the rest. What is this thing, really, once you take away the phrases we repeat without inspecting them? The code of life. The gene for. Editing, a word that describes almost nothing that actually happens, since the machine only cuts, and everything afterward is done by a cell with its own priorities and no interest in yours. And why did the world change in eighteen months, when the underlying biology had been sitting in the literature for a quarter of a century? The answer to that one is not biological at all. It is the price.
Wit is applied throughout to committees, journals, metaphors, and the author. It is withheld entirely from the patients, who are the reason any of this matters and who get the plainest prose in the book.
