"The conceit here — a talking German shepherd narrating her owner's recovery from a psychotic depressive break, his Holocaust-haunted family history, and a 30-day walk-and-treat regimen — is genuinely odd in a way that earns its oddness. Annie's voice interrupts itself constantly ("Wait - there's a rabbit. Chase it. No, stay on track"), and that structural tic does double duty: it's a joke about dog attention spans, and it's a formal mirror of how memory intrudes on a depressed narrator's attempts to stay on task. That's a smarter choice than it first appears. The book's real hook is the swerve nobody advertises: a breezy pet-wellness parody that suddenly delivers Alex's mother's testimony as a 12-year-old lookout against the Gestapo, then a six-year-old Alex finding "I Survived Hitler's Hell" in a Detroit basement with a dead girl's photograph inside. Annie's bit about German shepherds being coded "evil" in the family's imagination because "Nazis had shepherds" — resolved by Dodie "passing as non-German" — is a legitimately clever way to smuggle intergenerational trauma into a joke structure. ,,, But as a hybrid object — dog-comedy chassis carrying real trauma cargo — it's doing something few competitors attempt, and Annie's voice, cranky and loyal in equal measure, carries it."
