Descrição do livro

Doors Open Ontario is a province-wide heritage tourism program that gives the public free access to explore fascinating heritage properties across Ontario. It showcases the buildings, natural spaces, infrastructure and cultural landscapes that shape and define our communities. Doors Open Ontario began in 2002 to connect people to places by facilitating public access to built and natural heritage sites that normally restrict regular access to the public.

We visited Detweiler Meeting House which was built in 1855 and restored to its original in the 1990s. The interior matches what are now Old Order Mennonite meetinghouses.

Roseville United Brethren Church traces its roots to the 1820s. In December 2017, a woman passed out and drove her card into the church. Seventy-five percent of the church sanctuary was unrepairable; it was torn down and rebuilt from scratch.

The Homer Watson House & Gallery is the historical home, gallery and studio of Homer Watson, one of Canada’s most celebrated landscape painters. We had never heard of it so it was very interesting learning about him.

We had been to the Ken Seiling Waterloo Region Museum a few years ago. It is the largest community museum in Ontario, with stories and histories of Waterloo Region. The Martin House at the nearby Doon Heritage Village (which showcases rural life in 1914) was open.

The Waterloo County Gaol and Governor’s House are Waterloo Region’s oldest buildings dating from 1852-1853. The jail closed in 1978. This heritage site has been given a new purpose. The Gaol now houses Provincial Offences courtrooms, and the Governor’s House is home to legal offices.
