The Paris Universal Exposition of 1878 took place from May 1 to November 10, 1878, in Paris, France. This third Universal Fair, whose theme was Agriculture, Arts, and Industry, celebrated France's recovery after its crushing defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. The international juries awarded the silver medal to Hanon for his book The Virtuoso Pianist, and it is this edition that we have chosen for our research. By the end of the 19th century before the composer's death, it reached a level of fame throughout Europe and the United States, in fact, nowadays, piano students all over the world know Hanon's famous training exercises. So much so, that pianists such as Sergei Rachmaninoff claimed that Hanon was the secret of why the Russian piano school produced an explosion of virtuosity in his time. Undoubtedly, Hanon's contribution is undeniable, although the exercises emphasize the performer's mechanics and repetition in all keys as the key to achieving greater versatility, even with scales and arpeggios, it is still indispensable work for pianists.
We have added improvements in the page turns, providing more space for the performer's annotations and a better distribution of measures for the pianist's reading, corrections have been made to the musical text that is suggested in gray color. The editor would like to give special thanks to the National University of Spain, which provided this version for this research.
