Three complementary 4-note motifs taken from three trios by Alberto Colla (Piano Trio n. 2 “1916: forze di megalopoli al fronte”, 2003; Piano Trio n. 4 “La follia morale”, 2006; Piano Trio n. 5 “Concinnitas”, 2008), used to derive a 12-tone row and its relative dodecaphonic magic square; the first two tetrachords to form an octachord inscribed in Colla's Concinnitas and used for melodic lines on top of the 12-tone serial accompaniment (Josef Hauer's Klangreihe and automatic melody used for bass); overall form based on the Feynman diagram depicting the annihilation of an electron and a positron with the emission of a gluon.
Gluons (from glue, in Italian: 'colla') are represented through various numerical features:
_ n. 1: spin, helicity-> solo instrument;
_ n. 3: color charge-> three parts (bass, accompaniment and melody) constantly interchanging;
_ n. 8: gluon octet-> melodic octachord.
The melody moving on the Concinnitas harmonic magic square and the accompaniment moving on the 12-tone serial magic square represent matter and antimatter moving in opposite time directions.
In memory of Alberto Colla.
Composed in 2025.
