Descrição do livro

Measurement is the foundation of all engineering. A quantity that cannot be measured cannot be controlled, and a design that cannot be tested cannot be trusted. The engineer who understands how instruments work, what their readings mean, and how much those readings may be trusted holds one of the most durable and transferable skills in the profession. This book was written to build that understanding, beginning from first principles and carrying the reader through to the computer-based instruments of the present day.
The text is intended for undergraduate students of electrical, electronics, and instrumentation engineering, and for the practising technician or engineer who wishes to refresh the fundamentals. It assumes only a first course in circuit theory and basic electronics. Each topic is developed from its physical principle, expressed in a clear equation, illustrated with a labelled diagram, and reinforced with fully worked numerical examples. The emphasis throughout is on genuine understanding rather than the memorizing of formulae.
The twelve chapters follow a deliberate arc. The first chapter sets out the language of measurement: the structure of a measuring system, units and standards, the static and dynamic characteristics of instruments, and the analysis of error, which is the theme that underlies every measurement ever made. The next several chapters treat the classical instruments, the analog meters, the bridges used to measure resistance, inductance, and capacitance, the cathode-ray oscilloscope, and the signal generators and analyzers of the electronics bench. The book then turns to digital instruments and to the transducers that convert physical quantities into electrical signals, and it shows how those signals are conditioned, acquired, transmitted, and finally gathered into the virtual instruments that define modern practice.
Every chapter closes with a summary of its main results, a set of review questions to test the reader's grasp of the concepts, and a graded set of numerical problems, many with answers. In addition, each chapter contains a mini-project that invites the reader to build and measure something real, for the author is convinced that instrumentation is learned at the bench and not only at the desk. The appendices collect the constants, symbols, and reference data that the working engineer reaches for most often.
It is a pleasure to acknowledge the students whose questions, over many years of teaching, shaped the explanations in these pages. Their persistent and honest confusion, always the best guide to what needs explaining, is responsible for whatever clarity the book possesses. I dedicate this work to them, and to every reader who picks up an instrument and asks how it knows what it claims to know.
