This book is my attempt to set down, as faithfully as memory and forty years of notebooks allow, how a boy from a moshav in the Negev desert came to be called, half in jest and half in reverence, the Golfing God. I have tried to tell it the way he would have wanted it told — not as a myth, but as a life. A life with dropped shots and doubted calls, with slurs scrawled on lockers and a green jacket draped over trembling shoulders, with quiet mornings on a hill above the desert where none of it — not the trophies, not the headlines — mattered half as much as a boy named Ari swinging an olive-wood club between four painted rocks.
I was there for some of it. I was told the rest by the people who loved him. What follows is the truth, as best as one old sportswriter could gather it.
