Two rainbow trout come out of the same gravel in the same spring. One spends its whole life in the creek and measures nine inches in its third summer. The other drops into the lake below as a fingerling and now goes twenty-one inches and better than three pounds. Nothing separates them genetically. The difference is arithmetic, and understanding that arithmetic is where stillwater fly fishing begins. Lakes intimidate good river anglers because the current is gone and with it every visible clue about where fish should be. This book replaces those clues with a system. Reading water that does not move, building a sinking line setup that puts a fly at a known depth, and using leader and tippet to hold it there are treated as the foundation skills they are, because in stillwater depth control is the whole game. From there the book works through the food. Chironomids first, because they account for more stillwater trout than everything else combined, then damselflies and dragonflies in the weed beds, mayflies and caddis on the surface, and scuds, leeches and baitfish for the days when trout want something larger. Retrieves, line handling and the indicator game each get chapters, with the reasoning behind them rather than a list of patterns. The closing chapters cover the year itself, from ice-out through summer stratification to turnover, along with fishing from boats and float tubes, using wind instead of fighting it, and the habit of keeping records that turns a big anonymous reservoir into water you know.
