The Voice of the Moon: Madness and Lunar Longing is a sustained critical study of Federico Fellini's final completed film, The Voice of the Moon, approached not as a conventional narrative text but as a complex field of perception in which sound, image, memory, and social ritual continuously destabilize one another. Rather than offering a linear interpretation, the book develops a layered reading of Fellini's late style, tracing how meaning in the film emerges through fragmentation, repetition, and perceptual excess. At its center is the figure of Ivo Salvini, whose heightened and unstable attentiveness becomes a lens through which the collapse of shared meaning can be observed. Through him, the film articulates a world saturated by media noise, procedural repetition, and carnivalesque distortion, where interpretation is constantly demanded but never securely resolved. Structured in ten analytical parts, the study moves through key dimensions of the film's structure: media saturation and auditory overload, bureaucratic ritual and theatrical authority, grotesque carnival logic, silence as suspension of meaning, memory as fragmented reconstruction, and visual instability as a form of epistemic uncertainty. Unlike traditional film criticism that seeks definitive interpretation, this study follows Fellini's own logic of drift.
