The Feed: Are You Still There? (2005–2025)
Volume III of the TV Trilogy in the Myths and the Machine series
The schedule is dead. The feed never stops.
In 2005, YouTube launched and Netflix pivoted to streaming. The iPhone put television in your pocket. By the early 2020s, the average adult spent more than eleven hours a day consuming media—and the platforms knew exactly what to serve them next. The algorithmic feed had replaced the broadcast schedule, and with it came something television’s founders could only dream of: total capture.
The Feed completes the trilogy begun in The Box and The Cable, tracing how domestic time was colonised across ninety years. Where the schedule disciplined through scarcity and the cable bundle fragmented for profit, the feed traps through abundance. There’s always more. There’s always another video, another scroll, another notification pulling you back. The off switch is gone. The sanctuary no longer exists. You carry the device in your pocket, and it knows where you are, who you’re with, and what will keep you watching.
This is not a story about technology. It’s a story about power.
Who owns the platforms? A handful of trillion-dollar corporations. Who profits from the feed? Platform owners, advertisers, data brokers. Who pays the cost? Workers, kids, and everyone else—in sleep, in attention, in mental health, in the basic capacity to stay with anything difficult long enough to change it.
Drawing on leaked documents, whistleblower testimony, financial filings and public health data, The Feed shows how attention engineering wasn’t an accident but a discipline—developed by behavioural psychologists, refined through A/B testing, and deployed at scale to extract maximum engagement regardless of the fallout. The teen mental-health crisis isn’t a glitch. It’s baked into how the system runs. The loneliness epidemic isn’t a bug. It’s the product working exactly as designed.
The book also tracks how the state has woven itself into platform infrastructure—not mainly through secret plots but through structural alignment. The surveillance systems that serve advertisers serve law enforcement too. The content moderation that protects brands enables soft censorship. The algorithmic perception management that keeps users engaged keeps populations manageable.
The Feed doesn’t hand out lifestyle fixes. It offers something more useful: a map. The final column of every analysis asks not “what comes next?” but “where is the terrain of struggle?” The system that promised connection and delivered isolation, that promised freedom and delivered capture, that promised wellness and delivered crisis—that system cannot resolve its own contradictions. Something will break. What replaces it depends on whether we understand what built it.
The box trained us to watch. The cable trained us to choose. The feed trained us to scroll. This book asks: what would it take to stop?
