This book covers the foundational principles of wireless digital communications. It first analyzes the performance of digital modulation techniques such as quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). High-order modulations such as 256-QAM, 1024-QAM, and 4096-QAM are able achieve greater spectral efficiencies, thus leading to higher data rates. They form the basis of current and emerging wireless standards. By changing the modulation and coding scheme (MCS), the available data rate and robustness of the wireless signal can be adapted to deployment conditions. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a special form of multicarrier RF transmission involving orthogonal subcarriers or tones, designed to mitigate the delay spread caused by multipath signal propagation and other forms of interference. This book also describes the underlying principles of OFDM and additionally discusses the use of multiple antennas that forms the basis of high-speed wireless systems. Unlike OFDM, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna systems take advantage of multipath RF propagation to create multiple versions of the same signal, which increases the probability that the data will reach the receiving antenna without being affected by signal fading. The material in this book is a result of three short courses that were presented to engineers from top industries to refresh the key concepts of the wireless physical layer quickly, and is packed with important tips on system analysis and optimization.

About the Author

Benny Bing has published 20 books and over 70 scientific research papers. Cisco Systems adopted 18,000 printed copies of one of his books to launch its first wireless product. He was a technical editor for the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine for 10 years and has also guest edited for the IEEE Communications Magazine (2 issues) and the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas on Communications. His IEEE online tutorials were sponsored 8 times by industry. His research has appeared in the IEEE Spectrum and he received 2 IEEE best paper awards. He was invited by the National Science Foundation to participate in a workshop on Residential Broadband and received the National Association of Broadcasters Technology Innovation Award. He has also served as an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer with 10 invited lectures worldwide as well as an expert witness. He has been invited to conduct on-site broadband wireless courses for universities, conferences, and companies such as Qualcomm and Motorola Solutions. He holds 6 U.S. patents that were licensed to industry and is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
