Thirty diesel engine faults, presented the way they arrive in the shop or in the field: a symptom, an operator's account, and a table of readings, some of which matter and some of which do not. On each one you name two candidate causes, choose the single test that separates them, and say which reading would prove you wrong. Then you check your reasoning against an answer key that explains why the other candidates were set aside, which measurement supports the diagnosis, and what to fix so the fault does not come back.

This is a practice book, not a reference. It is written for diesel technicians, apprentices, fleet and plant maintenance staff, and instructors who want to stop replacing injectors and turbochargers on suspicion and start diagnosing from evidence.

HOW THE WORKBOOK IS ORGANISED

Chapters 1 to 3 set out the method and the background: the five-step diagnostic loop, a system refresher written from the failure-signature angle (air path and turbocharger, common-rail and mechanical fuel systems, compression, lubrication, cooling, starting and charging, aftertreatment), the instrument set, the symptom-cause matrix, smoke colour as a clue, and where to put the gauge. A worked example with a completed worksheet and a red-herring practice page show what a good answer looks like before you start.

Chapters 4 to 7 hold the scenarios in four families: air and turbocharger, fuel and injection, compression, lubrication, and cooling, and electrical, control, and aftertreatment. Each scenario sits on a left-hand page with its readings; the facing page is a worksheet with space for two hypotheses, the first test, the rejecting reading, and the repair. Every chapter opens with the procedures its scenarios depend on, such as reading boost and restriction under load, pressure-testing the charge circuit, the injector return flow test, compression and leak-down, reading the cooling system, the voltage drop test, and reading codes and live data, and closes with a field checklist.

Chapter 8 is the answer key with full reasoning and a symptom index. Chapter 9 is a final review week: a rapid review, common traps, an extra practice set, a troubleshooting log template, a baseline table for your own engines, and a sign-off checklist. A glossary closes the book.

- Using compression spread, leak-down, blow-by, and oil analysis as trend instruments
- Treating a code as a circuit and a derate as a measured condition
- Spotting the readings that are out of specification but not the cause

Every test in the book assumes isolation, a bled and verified high pressure fuel side, cooled hot parts, an engine locked against rotation where the test requires it, rated instruments at the manufacturer's test points, and the precedence of the engine manufacturer's and the site's procedures. The scenarios are composites written for instruction; engine values are given as that engine's specification, and they are not affiliated with any manufacturer.
