Written by the Roman military engineer Marcus Vitruvius Pollio between roughly 30 and 20 BC and dedicated to the Emperor Augustus, De Architectura is the foundational text of Western architecture. It is the book that codified the canonical triad of firmitas, utilitas, and venustas (firmness, commodity, and delight), formulated the analogy between the proportions of the human body and the proportions of a well-designed temple (the conceptual seed of Leonardo's Vitruvian Man), and transmitted the Greek classical orders to two thousand years of Western practice.

This is the celebrated 1914 Harvard University Press translation by Morris Hicky Morgan, Late Professor of Classical Philology at Harvard, completed posthumously by Albert A. Howard with illustrations supervised by Herbert Langford Warren, founder of Harvard's School of Architecture. Based on Valentine Rose's authoritative 1899 Leipzig text, Morgan's rendering preserves the genuine voice of a working Roman engineer rather than dressing it in Ciceronian elegance.
