The Navier-Stokes Millennium Problem -- An Unwelcome Solution

Dr. Dwight Walsh, author of American Physicist Solves the Famous Navier-Stokes Millennium Problem, describes his experiences with the mathematics community to get his solution accepted and published. Although this problem has been regarded as extremely important to resolve for over a century, the reception Dr. Walsh received was hardly a hero's welcome. First, his solution was rejected by numerous mathematics journals over "straw-man" claims he did not make or for reasons not related to mathematical correctness. Eventually, he introduced his solution in an online forum sponsored by Prof. Terence Tao of UCLA titled Why global regularity for Navier-Stokes is hard, and the response there was totally hostile. Along with similar straw-man claims, they resorted to invalid counter-examples and false "red flags". Finally, they "invalided" the proof of existence and smoothness (of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation) by adjusting the well-established solution method of the Poisson equation with the 3D Greens function, thereby allowing singularities (or "roughness") into the NS solutions that could not occur otherwise.

The situation actually gets comical when Dr. Walsh shows that their creative re-solution of Poisson's equation, when applied to the field of electrostatics, implies that there is a force acting on each charged particle (eg. an electron) due to its own self-field. This, of course, is physically impossible since no particle can exert a force on itself by any mechanism. Not only that, but it is an infinite force acting in who-knows-what direction. Despite all of this, however, these "experts" rigidly held to their own version of solving Poisson's equation.

One need not be a mathematician to comprehend the frustration that Dr. Walsh has been up against in dealing with these individuals. While scientific theories come and go with each wave of new evidence, mathematics is generally regarded as much more precise and rigorous. For example, 2 x 2 will always equal 4, and even the greatest mathematicians can't change this fact. Well, these participants on Tao's blog performed a stunt analogous to claiming that 2 x 2 = 5 when they creatively re-solved the Poisson equation and used the result to claim they had invalidated Dr. Walsh's proof.

Of course, the next question that might be asked is why these professors, editors, and other "experts" seem to be ganging up against an individual who is offering a potential solution to such an "important" problem, using false arguments as necessary to win their case? Unfortunately, however, this is one question the book does not address since Dr. Walsh has only discussed mathematics problems. People problems are a completely different matter.

Even if you are not much into mathematics yourself, this book would make a great gift for someone you know who is. Perhaps they could find an error in the proof of existence and smoothness of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation which has thus far eluded everyone who has read the paper submitted to the journals. If not, then maybe they could provide some insight as to why the mathematics community seems to want this paper squelched by whatever means necessary.
