EMC has a reputation in electronics of “black magic” or “witchcraft”. The famous quote is that it is “the study of the elements the designer neglected to put on the schematic”. ESD (electro-static discharge) is one of the highest failure rate EMC immunity tests that we encounter. Often the causes of the problem are not obvious leading to engineers focusing on the wrong solutions to the problem.

Text books dealing with Electro-Magnetic Compatibility often use complicated formulae and words to describe a simple system but offer little practical advice. They are big, thick, sometimes inaccessible tomes of knowledge that sit on your shelf. Sometimes they make us look clever, or we feel clever for having them (I am guilty of this). The aim of this book is to actually try and make you clever, not to try and demonstrate how clever I might be. On the subject of EMC I’m always learning (I love it) but I love teaching and sharing knowledge way more.
