About the Book
We have been looking at economic life the wrong way round—focusing so intently on the visible surface of competition that we overlook the deep, layered architecture of collaboration that makes the surface possible. The Collaborative Economy corrects the inversion.
This book is the successor to three earlier works by Dr. Farooq: Win-Win Paradigm for a Better World, Ethics is Smart, and The Two Silences and the Human Interval. In those volumes, he argued that cooperation is not a concession to weakness but a source of strength, and that ethical conduct is not a drag on performance but a productive asset. The Collaborative Economy completes the intellectual arc those works began. It provides the unified economic framework—the analytical architecture, the institutional principles, and the normative grounding—that underpins the vision of a win-win, ethically intelligent economy.
Drawing on insights from institutional economics, network theory, commons governance, feminist economics, and the world's great ethical traditions, the book develops a collaboration-centered framework. It shows how value is created through complementary networks and shared knowledge, how real markets combine cooperation and competition into the hybrid structure of coopetition, and why trust, institutions, and ethical norms are not soft cultural extras but hard economic infrastructure.
Applying this framework to business and innovation, development, finance, and global challenges, the book demonstrates what becomes visible when we correct the inversion. It does not reject competition but situates it within the collaborative scaffold it depends on. And it proposes a guiding principle—mutual enablement—as the criterion for designing institutions that serve shared prosperity and human dignity.
Written for economists, policymakers, business leaders, students, and citizens concerned with the future of economic life, the book is at once a diagnostic work, a theoretical synthesis, and a practical guide. Together with Win-Win Paradigm for a Better World, Ethics is Smart, and The Two Silences and the Human Interval, it forms a sustained argument that the economy is a collaborative project, and that its success depends on how well we recognize, invest in, and govern that reality.
