Success at the Table Has Very Little to Do with Privilege—and Everything to Do with Confidence.

Have you ever been invited to a business dinner, networking event, or interview lunch and worried about ordering the wrong thing, choosing the wrong wine, or making a mistake in front of clients or colleagues?

You're not alone.

In today's world, careers are often advanced over meals, relationships are built at the table, and first impressions can influence opportunities long before business begins. Yet few people are ever taught the practical skills that make these moments feel natural and confident.

Drawing on her experience in some of New York City's most respected restaurants—including One Fifth, Balthazar, and Augustine—as well as her career as Vice President and Director of Sales for two major New York television stations, Debbie von Ahrens combines restaurant expertise with real-world business experience to help readers navigate dining situations with confidence and ease.

Inside you'll learn how to:

• Order food and wine with confidence.
• Understand menus, culinary terms, and restaurant etiquette.
• Navigate business meals, networking events, and client entertainment.
• Host memorable lunches and dinners with grace.
• Build stronger first impressions through professional presence.
• Understand restaurant service from the front-of-house perspective.
• Handle table settings, utensils, stemware, tipping, and other often-overlooked details.
• Feel comfortable in almost any dining situation.

Whether you're beginning your career, entertaining clients, interviewing for your next opportunity, traveling, or simply wanting to feel more confident in restaurants, The Business of Dining provides practical, approachable advice that can be applied immediately.

More than a book about dining, it's a guide to confidence, communication, and making a five-star impression.

A Note from the Author
After retiring from a successful career in television sales, I returned to the restaurant industry after nearly forty years. The experience was eye-opening.

I saw that many people weren't lacking good manners—they simply had never been taught the unwritten rules of dining, networking, and hospitality. Too often, confidence at the table is mistaken for privilege when it's really the result of preparation and experience.

I wrote this book to help level the playing field. Whether you're heading off to college, starting your first job, building your career, or simply returning to restaurants with fresh confidence, my hope is that these pages help you feel comfortable, capable, and ready for whatever seat at the table comes next.

Thank you for considering The Business of Dining. I hope it becomes a resource you'll return to throughout your career—and throughout your life.

Cheers,

Debbie von Ahrens
