Symphony No. 2 by W. A. Young, (Webster Young) in four movements. The premiere took place in Bergen, NJ in 1983, with George Manahan conducting the Garden State Symphony Orchestra.

The symphony is mentioned, and its music heard, in the film “6000 Miles to Ukraine”, a documentary about the 2019 performance of Young’s 5th symphony in Lviv. The film appeared on most PBS stations between July 2022 and January 2023.

The first movement is characterized by a long opening melody in the Phrygian mode followed by a cadential theme of prodigious energy, influenced by Stravinskiian and jazz rhythms.

The second movement, the “Air for Strings” has often been performed by itself and became W A Young’s 10th ballet written for Eric Hyrst at the State Ballet of Oregon. The ballet had great success and was repeated in three subsequent productions.
