That single proposition anchors Position, a work of literary nonfiction that follows one idea across three centuries and a dozen cities: new money never diffuses evenly through an economy. The mechanism has a name. It was first described by Richard Cantillon, an Irish-French banker who made a fortune in the Paris of 1720, understood exactly what he was doing, wrote it down, and died in a London house fire in 1734. This book is, in one sense, three hundred years late.

Douglas Thiessen—a former capital-markets executive who came to finance late, after two decades as a working jazz musician, and now writes from a rented apartment two blocks from Copacabana—uses the travelogue as his form. This is not a polemic against capitalism, and it is not a list of villains. Its category is not blame but position—a structural fact, not a moral one. The people standing near the mouth of the pipe didn't, in the ordinary sense, choose to be there. The people standing in the puddle at its end already know the water is half gone. Thiessen's task, as he puts it, is to describe the mechanism to the people it benefits. The people it costs need no explanation.
