For nine years, One Tree Hill told a generation of viewers that a small town could be a safe place, that a group of friends could be a family, that the right song at the right moment could hold a whole life together. Its most quoted line said something darker. "People always leave." It was Peyton Sawyer's refrain, and it turned out to be the truest thing the show ever said, about the characters, about the cast, and about the series itself.
People Always Leave is the complete story of One Tree Hill, the mid-tier WB teen drama that outlasted almost everything flashier around it and ran for nine seasons and one hundred and eighty-seven episodes. It traces the show's unlikely path from an unmade movie called Ravens to a nine-year phenomenon, the young cast who built their whole adult lives in Wilmington, North Carolina, the club called Tric that turned the show into one of television's great music launchpads, and the operatic melodrama, stalkers, a school shooting, a killer uncle, a psycho nanny, that the show delivered with a straight face and a full heart. It follows the four-year time jump that reinvented the series, the contract disputes that cost it its original leads, and the fierce fandom that never needed the critics' approval.
It also reckons, carefully, with the parts the fans did not see. Drawing on the creators' interviews, the cast's own Drama Queens rewatch podcast, trade-press reporting, and the public record, Walter Curtis lays out the 2017 open letter in which eighteen women named creator Mark Schwahn's conduct an "open secret," and Bethany Joy Lenz's account of the decade she spent inside a cult while playing Haley James Scott, keeping fact, allegation, and personal testimony distinct throughout. It is the story of a show about leaving, told by the people who lived it, and it does not look away.
