For four months of the Antarctic winter, a male emperor penguin stands in the dark holding a single egg on his feet. He does not eat. He endures temperatures ~60°C ( ~ 70°F) and storms that last for days, packed into a shuffling huddle so tight its centre reaches body heat while its edge freezes. By the time the chick hatches he has lost almost half his weight. Then his mate returns from the sea and finds him among thousands of identical birds by the sound of his voice alone.
That endurance only makes sense once you see what a penguin truly is. On land it waddles, upright and comic. Underwater it becomes the fastest and deepest-diving bird alive, an emperor plunging to five hundred metres on one breath with its heart slowed to fifteen beats a minute.
There are eighteen species of penguin, all of them native to the Southern Hemisphere, and they stretch from the equator to the deep Antarctic. The Galápagos penguin lives within a few degrees of the equator, where shedding heat is the daily problem. The emperor penguin breeds in darkness at temperatures that hit minus sixty with wind chill, the coldest sustained conditions any bird endures on Earth. Most species hold the cool coastal waters of the subantarctic zone: South America, South Africa, New Zealand, and the island chains that ring Antarctica.
A penguin walked into the sea, and the sea wrote the body that still waddles home.
