Square pegs do not fit well into round holes.
For most of her life, ultra-distance athlete and personal trainer Luan has felt like a square peg.
Having always felt insecure, she hoped that she would somehow become more confident as she hit middle age. Instead, in her late 40s, at an age when most people seem to find some level of stability in their life, Luan faced turmoil. Her marriage in tatters, her business in pieces, her health failing, her sexuality shifting, and her relationship with her birth family breaking down, she is forced to reconsider her sense of self, and takes us along for the ride.
This book comprises the musings and memoirs of a 50-something wife, mother, athlete and trainer coming to terms with her history and sexuality, her fragility and her strength.
An endurance athlete with a penchant for ultra-distance running, with a thriving personal training business, and a traditional family unit of a husband and daughter, Luan describes how each of those elements came unraveled in her life and her battles as she moved forwards.
Stopping being everything the world has wanted her to be, and starting to live as her own authentic self, Luan takes us along on her journey of self discovery. As part of the process, she explores her family relationships, her athletic background, her struggles with self-image and mental health, and her shifting sexuality. Along the way, Luan delves into psychology, trauma, narcissism, anxiety and depression and the constantly shifting sands of interpersonal relations. She explores her own passage into endurance sports and the roles she feels that running has played in her mental health. She also looks at self-image, self-confidence, and building a new narrative for the future.
This is a book about hope. This is a book about self-respect. It is a book about self-love, a book about learning to show up for yourself every day. And it is a book about picking yourself up, dusting yourself off, and moving forward.
