For twenty-nine years, Neva Ressel has worked the desk that erases people.

When someone vanishes from a Trieste address, a municipal officer knocks on their door three times across one year. If nobody answers, the person is removed from the register of the living population of the city. There is no requirement that anyone tell them this has happened. There is no mechanism by which anyone could.

Privately, Neva keeps a notebook. In it are the names of people who left her own life without her noticing that the last time had already happened — sixty-one of them, accumulated over thirty-five years. Dry, exact and unexpectedly funny, it moves at the speed of a bureaucratic procedure — ninety days, three knocks, four possible outcomes — toward a door eight streets away, and the woman who is not answering it.

The state records the beginning of a life and the end of one, in ink, in duplicate. It records nothing at all about the middle, where all the leaving happens.
