This hymnal is a collection of 122 classic hymns. The skill level needed to play the hymns ranges from a beginners level to advanced tin whistle players. The arrangements are notated in standard western notation and finger tablature for tin whistle players.

This collection of hymns titled “Hymns and Psalms for Key of G Irish Tin Whistles” is focused on using an alto or mezzo key "G" tin whistle.

In thinking about which approach to take in arranging hymns and psalms to be played using an alto G tin whistle. There were 2 basic choices as to which scale and staff representation to take. Use either a G3 or G4 starting point on the staff to represent the melody of each hymn or psalm. My approach has been to use a G3 (alto pitch which matches the whistle target) as a starting point as hymns and psalms are generally perceived, I think as quiet thoughtful music. A G4 scale representation reaches into a higher range that to be honest would give a hymn a shrill uncomfortable sound if played according to a presentation of how the music is notated in standard western music staff. So all hymns in this collection will use the G3 notated scale in support of an alto or mezzo key of G tin whistle.

Each hymn or psalm will also have a page arrangement where the left page is presented in standard staff and lyrics layout along with the right page presenting the hymn or psalm in finger tablature under a standard staff layout.

Genesis of this Hymnal

Where does this collection of classic hymns for the Irish Tin Whistles come from? It is an offshoot from my playing hymns in an in-patient hospice setting whose goal for each weekly session of hymns and select other songs is to provide a moment of uplifting engagement for the listeners whether a patient or family and friends. I was looking for a resource to pull from to support my play list for each week and only found a very limited amount of hymn sheet music for tin whistles. Over the time that I had been playing for the hospice I transcribed and arranged a number of hymns and the stack of hymn sheet music pages was beginning to look like a book when piled up on my desk. So here is that pile plus more as a Hymnal, not just a pile of paper on a desk. I hope that this hymnal will provide a resource to all those who play tin whistles or like listening to one and also speaks to those moments when in need of solace, hope, comfort, peace and assurance.
