Freed at Last: The Max Freed Stories

Freed at Last is a series of linked short stories and a one-act play that narrate the life of the mythical photographer Max Freed who photographed much of the 20th Century. A man of the Left, he gained fame photographing strikes across the USA during the depression. His social conscience was nearly destroyed in combat with company goons yet Freed managed to find love and continue working until drafted into the army at an advanced age and made an officer in India in charge of the photographic service of V Mail. Returning to the States, Freed falls in hard times during the McCarthy era and resorts to working in Resorts. That is to say, hotels in Florida. Returning to New York, Freed finds himself financially strapped and unknown as a photographer despite his one-time fame. Reduced to a lone admirer, Leon Goldberg, who serves as Freed's foil, Freed is bitter and angry. Will he find fame, riches and the love of beautiful women? And will any of this lead to happiness? Read the book and find out.
