Introduction

Nearly six tenths of the earth's land surface receives less than twenty inches of rain a year. In 1911 a Harvard-trained chemist asked what could be grown there on rainfall alone, and answered in twenty chapters that show how to grow wheat, corn and lucerne on ground most farmers had written off. The irrigation century buried the question. Falling groundwater has dug it up again.

Synopsis

Dry-Farming is the first orderly account of raising crops without irrigation under limited rainfall. Widtsoe begins with the rain itself, mapping the arid and semiarid belts of the world, then turns to the soils of dry country and shows why they are chemically richer than the leached ground of wet regions. From there the argument builds: how deep roots travel, how water enters soil and is held there, how evaporation and transpiration steal it back, and what ploughing, fallowing, sowing and harvesting can do about it. Later chapters cover the drought resistant crops suited to dry land, the composition of dry-farm harvests, soil fertility, implements, and the relation between irrigation and dry farming. A history of the practice from antiquity to the Dry Farming Congress follows, then a survey of the dry-farm regions of America and the world, a chapter on surviving the year of drouth, and a four-page summary of the whole method. It is a book about water conservation written for people who had none to spare.
