Author Eric Thompson reveals obscure facts regarding tthe problems encountered in forming two ten-team leagues. The American League and National League expansion drafts are analyzed and critiqued. The successes and failures of the Los Angeles Angels, Washington Senators, Houston Colt .45s, and New York Mets are presented.

In the second half of the book Thompson moves beyond the facts and mathematically contrives plausible sets of statistics for two eight-team leagues playing a traditional 154-game schedule from 1961 through 1962 as if expansion had never taken place. Particular attention is placed on the validity of Roger Maris’ single season home run record during the 1961 American League season and Maury Wills’ single season stolen base record during the 1962 National League season.
