The book presents 500 checkmates, stemming from the games of Garry Kasparov. The collection includes checkmates, that Kasparov set to his opponents, as well as variations, that could have happened, but were left behind the scenes. In this manner the wealth of possible play is increased, and could only be beneficial to improved understanding.
Most of the lines are capped at 3 to 4 moves deep, there are certainly some shorter examples, and perhaps a series of longer ones. The goal will be to find the shortest way to delivering checkmate on the board. In case there are alternative solutions, those will be pointed out clearly. You must grab a piece or pawn, and start making checks, until the hostile king, that of Kasparov's opponent, is checkmated. On rare occasions, a quiet move, that doesn't involve check, is required, but it should necessarily lead to forced checkmate.
The purpose of the book is not so much to highlight what specific moves Kasparov has executed over the board, rather than serve as useful training tool for enhancing players' skills of recognising and delivering checkmates.
Checkmate is at the basis of everything, every single winning chess position actually represents checkmate in specific number of moves. May be 1-move-long, or may be 20-move-long. The better players recognise more mates, and the more mates you recognise, a stronger player you will become.
